Leading Operators Unite to Unleash Global Apps Potential

Wholesale Applications Community to push apps market to over 3 billion customers with strong support by world-leading device manufacturers

15 February 2010, Barcelona: Twenty-four leading telecommunications operators have formed the Wholesale Applications Community, an alliance to build an open platform that delivers applications to all mobile phone users.

América Móvil, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, KT, mobilkom austria group, MTN Group, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Orascom Telecom, Softbank Mobile, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor Group, TeliaSonera, SingTel, SK Telecom, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, VimpelCom, Vodafone and Wind are committed to create an ecosystem for the development and distribution of mobile and internet applications irrespective of device or technology.

Together, these operators have access to over three billion customers around the world. The GSMA and three of the world's largest device manufacturers - LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony Ericsson - also support this initiative.

The Wholesale Applications Community aims to unite a fragmented marketplace and create an open industry platform that benefits everybody - from applications developers and network operators to mobile phone users themselves.

The alliance's stated goal is to create a wholesale applications ecosystem that - from day one - will establish a simple route to market for developers to deliver the latest innovative applications and services to the widest possible base of customers around the world. In the immediate future the alliance will seek to unite members' developer communities and create a single, harmonised point of entry to make it easy for developers to join.

"The GSMA is fully supportive the Wholesale Applications Community, which will build a new, open ecosystem to spur the creation of applications that can be used regardless of device, operating system or operator," said Rob Conway, CEO and Member of the Board, GSMA. "This approach is completely in line with the principles of the GSMA, and in fact leverages the work we have already undertaken on open network APIs (OneAPI). This is tremendously exciting news for our industry and will serve to catalyse the development of a range of innovative cross-device, cross-operator applications."

Jonathan Arber, Senior Research Analyst at independent analyst house, IDC, said: "Attracting and retaining developers is vital for any application store offering to succeed. However, mobile application developers currently face a high level of fragmentation in the industry, in terms of both technology platforms, and individual operators' working practices. Developers want to meet the largest possible addressable market, as efficiently and painlessly as possible, and the Wholesale Applications Community initiative can meet these criteria by providing a simple, single point of access to a large number of operator storefronts. The initiative should also help to drive uptake of existing, open standards among developers, operators and manufacturers, thereby reducing fragmentation and benefiting the whole industry."

The alliance plans to initially use both the JIL and OMTP BONDI requirements, evolving these standards into a common standard within the next 12 months. Ultimately, we will collectively work with the W3C for a common standard based on our converged solution to truly ensure developers can create applications that port across mobile device platforms, and in the future between fixed and mobile devices.

The alliance will serve as one point of contact for the industry and is open to all relevant parties - from telecommunications operators and device manufacturers to internet service providers and application software developers. For more information go to

DOCOMO Develops 8-Band Power Amplifier for Mobile Phones

TOKYO, JAPAN, January 8, 2010 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that it has developed a prototype multi-band power amplifier that accommodates eight frequency bands between 700 MHz and 2.5 GHz, paving the way for lightweight, all-in-one mobile phones capable of standalone wireless communications of different standards, including the forthcoming extra-fast LTE standard as well as existing W-CDMA and GSM.

Power amplifiers are used in mobile phones to increase signal power up to levels required for wireless communication.

As conventional multi-band phones must employ a separate single-band amplifier for each band, the sizes of these phones will inevitably increase to accommodate new frequency bands for LTE services being launched in markets worldwide, including Japan.

DOCOMO's new amplifier, which offers gain and output power equivalent to those of conventional single-band amplifiers, paves the way for multi-standard mobile phones that are generally no larger than existing models. It enables 8-band operation by employing matching circuits whose frequency characteristics are controlled by multiple semiconductor switches according to the required frequency band.

DOCOMO will present its new amplifier at the 2010 IEEE Radio and Wireless Symposium in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, from 10:30 AM on January 11.

DOCOMO Introducing Remote Radio Equipment for LTE Base Stations

TOKYO, JAPAN, December 17, 2009 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that in preparation for the start of extra-high-speed LTE mobile service, it is deploying new W-CDMA base stations equipped with newly developed remote radio equipment (RRE) units to provide both existing W-CDMA and forthcoming LTE service.

The RRE-equipped base stations will account for about half of the initial LTE base stations when DOCOMO becomes one of world's first operators to launch an LTE service in December 2010.

The deployment is a part of DOCOMO's initial plan to layer a 2GHz LTE network over its existing 3G network to provide dual W-CDMA/LTE service, which will combine the benefits of LTE's high transmission speeds with 3G's wide-area coverage as the LTE network is expanded gradually.

The new RRE (also known as remote radio head) allows the relatively easy and efficient installation of LTE base stations to existing W-CDMA base stations (see diagrams below). Compared to existing equipment, it also helps to lower operational costs thanks to its reduced weight, size and energy consumption.

The RRE-equipped base station comprises a master unit for signal processing and maintenance functions and the RRE for modulating and demodulating both W-CDMA and LTE signals transmitted and received via antenna. The two are linked by optical fiber.

DOCOMO & Fujitsu Develop Counter-Failure Technologies for IP Networks

— Expected to Support Coming Launch of High-Speed LTE Services —

TOKYO, JAPAN, December 16, 2009 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. and Fujitsu Limited announced today their development of two technologies to detect and locate "silent failures" in IP networks much faster and more accurately than currently possible (see diagrams below).

The new technologies will enable DOCOMO to significantly shorten the time required to recover from silent failures, which will support the eventual launch of extra-high-speed LTE services over DOCOMO's emerging IP-based mobile network.

A silent failure occurs when a router in an IP network fails and data transmission is halted without the network administrator being notified, since routers cannot detect internal failures. Network operators can install dedicated monitoring devices that detect silent failures, but only by continually transmitting test data throughout the entire network and then analyzing the test results, making the process time-consuming.

One of the two new technologies analyzes data on not only test transmissions but also loss rates and network delays, which facilitates faster detection of silent failures. It can also detect warning signs of silent failures that are possibly about to occur.

The second technology identifies the location of silent failures in an efficient manner by analyzing data only from routes over which data is actually being transmitted. In trials conducted on DOCOMO's existing FOMA™ 3G network, the technology identified failure locations by up to 80 percent faster than the conventional method. This technology also enhances conventional network-monitoring systems by analyzing failure and operational data in combination, which improves the accuracy of failure location and enables ordinary and silent failures to be separately identified.

TOKYO, JAPAN, November 25, 2009 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that beginning December 21 it will launch the trial operation of a network of environmental sensors that measure pollen, carbon dioxide (CO2), ultraviolet (UV) sunlight and other atmospheric conditions (see graphic below) that can affect human health and daily life.

DOCOMO will provide the data to companies for use in various commercial applications, such as weather forecasting and other information services, as well as to pharmaceutical companies, healthcare institutions and municipal governments for a variety of other purposes.

The network of sensors, the largest and densest of its kind in Japan, reflects DOCOMO's ongoing efforts to leverage its mobile network and facilities to create new value in sectors including environmental protection, safety, security and healthcare. The network will take advantage of DOCOMO's existing mobile network covering virtually the entire nation, including both urban and rural areas.

By the start of the trial, DOCOMO will have installed sets of environmental sensors in 300 locations within the Kanto region surrounding Tokyo and bordering Shizuoka Prefecture. The network is expected to be expanded to 2,500 locations nationwide within fiscal 2010 (ends March 2011) and then eventually to 9,000 locations.

Initially the network will offer data on pollen, followed later by data on CO2, UV and other atmospheric conditions that will be offered in cooperation with companies specialized in such fields.

DOCOMO, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Fujitsu Push Ahead with LTE Mobile-Terminal Platform— Complete development of LTE-PF chipset engineering sample —

TOKYO, October 1, 2009 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC., NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited announced today that they are making progress with their joint development of "LTE-PF", a mobile-terminal platform based on Long Term Evolution (LTE), a coming mobile communication standard for super-fast downlinks above 100 Mbps and uplinks above 50 Mbps.

The four companies have completed the development of an LTE-PF chipset engineering sample and are now evaluating its main functions. The sample will be exhibited at the NTT Group stand at ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland from October 5 to 9 and the DOCOMO stand at CEATEC JAPAN 2009 at Makuhari Messe, Chiba Prefecture, Japan from October 6 to 10.

LTE-PF is a core system comprising software for baseband processing and other basic functions in mobile communication devices (see chart). The platform's technology is expected to be licensed in mobile phone markets worldwide, where its adoption as a common platform will free manufacturers of mobile phones and chipsets from having to develop proprietary technologies for basic functions. As a result, manufacturers will get products to market faster and at lower costs, and will be able to concentrate more resources on the development of enhanced lineups of unique products.

The LTE protocol on which LTE-PF is based is currently being standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Seamless hand-over is possible between LTE and the current third-generation (3G) standards W-CDMA and GSM, meaning that users would be unaware of switching networks even while using their phones.
